Japango
sushi downtown pic added by Vanessa

Elizabeth Street south of Dundas,, Toronto

Favourite things at Japango

I'm in a love-hate phase with their odd service and sometimes ill-cut pieces of fish, but nowhere else in the downtown area can you find a more authentic sushi joint. The deluxe sushi dinner has been upped in price but for $26 you will get the most delicious and interesting selection in town. A lightly seared albacore tuna is a staple and beautiful pieces of scallop will sometimes grace that plate. It was here that I got my introduction to kampachi. You'll also never look at rice the same again.

It's the closest thing to sushi in Japan that I can get in Toronto at a reasonable price. Both the nigiri and maki I've had at Japango have been skillfully formed with fresh fish. Tiny and charming, this sweet spot tucked away on Elizabeth St. is rightly a frequent haunt of workers who toil in and around city hall.

I lived three years in Japan, and this place makes the grade. It's a true replica of bona fide Tokyo sushi-ya, from decor to staff to cuisine and its presentation. Try the signature Japango roll (california roll with grilled scallops and roe), or anything made from the chef's recommendation of the day's best fish. Other faves - the seaweed salad, agedashi tofu, and black sesame ice cream. Mmmm. Thank you Japan(go).
