Here are the faves for katcollins

katcollins's fave Outdoor movie theatre is at dundas square

katcollins's fave Outdoor movie theatre is at dundas square because I've never been a huge fan of the enormous concrete slab that is Dundas Square. Sure, the fountain is nice when it's on, but otherwise the square is just big, empty, and hard to use. This summer's "outer space in an outdoor place" screenings of classics like 2001 and Blade Runner are, in my opinion, an optimal way to put it to good use.

katcollins's fave movie theatre that's really someone's studio is at Trash Palace

katcollins's fave movie theatre that's really someone's studio is at Trash Palace because Every couple of Fridays, the super-keen and adorable hosts at the Trash Palace open their doors to Toronto's weirdest film fans and show an eclectic mix of 16mm prints. The place is a mix of chair seating and cushion-y floor space, and recent screenings have included a "Chimp Fest" (yes, that's an entire monkey themed evening). No walk-ins allowed, so hit Suspect Video for your advance tickets.

katcollins's fave Toronto International Film Festival programme is at Midnight Madness

katcollins's fave Toronto International Film Festival programme is at Midnight Madness because TIFF's edgiest programme - Midnight Madness, is a collection of weird, wonderful films from directors who, according to the TIFF website, "prefer to work in genres not usually seen in a festival context". I'm all for collapsing hierarchies between A & B movies, classics & cult classics. Colin Geddes, who programs Midnight Madness, always does it right.

katcollins's fave Best Movie Snacks is at Rainbow Market Square

katcollins's fave Best Movie Snacks is at Rainbow Market Square because There's a lot to like about the Rainbow chain of movie theatres. They show new releases at much lower prices than the bigger chains, and their decor is way better. The Market Square location has a wicked mural and a piano that plays itself! The best thing about the theatre though, is their popcorn. It's fresher, crunchier, and more buttery than the competition's. Plus, there's a Dominion next door, so if you really want to, you can sneak in stuff like yogurt covered almonds and sesame sticks.

katcollins's fave Place to volunteer is at Cinematheque Ontario

katcollins's fave Place to volunteer is at Cinematheque Ontario because Sure, volunteering at film festivals is glamorous. But the year-round prize goes to Cinematheque Ontario, which screens classics and recent international films at the AGO's Jackman Hall. Volunteering there isn't difficult, if you're prompt, responsible, and courteous, but the perks are great! As long as there's a free seat in the theatre, you get to stick around and watch the film. The regulars are a friendly, smart bunch, and the staff are total sweethearts. What more could a film buff want?

katcollins's fave Place to nerd-out about movies is at The Film Reference Library

katcollins's fave Place to nerd-out about movies is at The Film Reference Library because Film students are all undoubtedly familiar with the Film Reference Library, but in fact, it's a pretty fun place to hang out even if you don't have homework to do. Their collection includes countless books, magazines, newspaper clippings, scripts, posters, soundtracks and of course, tonnes of movies. There are even viewing stations. The only thing you can't do is bring popcorn.

katcollins's fave non-full-time movie theatre is at Cinecycle

katcollins's fave non-full-time movie theatre is at Cinecycle because This bicycle repair shop by day, arts & culture venue by night isn't a full time movie theatre, but the events hosted there are always amazing. The Pleasure Dome film & video exhibition group (www.pdome.org) is just one of the many interesting organizations that use this venue. The building is equipped with all manner of film projectors and an owner who makes some of the best lattes in town. This no-frills venue consistently delivers 'best vibes', 'best company' and 'best programming'.

katcollins's fave Way to get my horror fix is at Rue Morgue

katcollins's fave Way to get my horror fix is at Rue Morgue because The Rue Morgue magazine has always been a top notch publication about everything that's scary, gory and twisted in the world of horror. However, with frequent special screenings around town, and the annual Festival of Fear (which this year brought horror giants Dario Argento and George Romero to our fine town), Rue Morgue are quickly becoming a one-stop shop for all things horror related. Check out their screening of Night of the Creeps at the Bloor on Sept 20th. The film is mind-blowing.

katcollins's fave Recently Refurbished Old Movie Theatre is at The Royal

katcollins's fave Recently Refurbished Old Movie Theatre is at The Royal because Once part of the now sadly defunct (except for the Fox) Festival Cinemas chain, the Royal has recently been restored to its former art-deco glory. Recently screened international hits such as Werner Herzog's Rescue Dawn and Ingmar Bergman's Saraband run smoothly alongside cult favourites like Demons 2 and Grindhouse. Plus, everything runs for a few days, so you actually have a chance to fit it into your busy schedule. Bonus feature: reclining bucket seats!

katcollins's fave Video store is at First Choice Video Club

katcollins's fave Video store is at First Choice Video Club because This family run video store boasts the best VHS collection in the city. If ever there was a film you saw, wished you could see, or heard about from someone else, which you can't find at the usual well-stocked video stores, try First Choice. The collection is catalogued according to release date, so browsing is always and adventure. Truly mind boggling selection.

katcollins's fave croissant is at Rahier Patisserie

katcollins's fave croissant is at Rahier Patisserie because They make superb mousses, tarts, eclairs, petits fours, cakes and everything in between, but they won my heart for their soft-yet-crispy-and-flaky, buttery, buttery croissants.

katcollins's fave Place to drink on a patio during the day is at Embassy

katcollins's fave Place to drink on a patio during the day is at Embassy because This place is run by British ex-pats, and god bless them. It's probably the only place in the city where you can get a pitcher of Pimm's and lemonade, properly garnished with the cucumbers, strawberries, bells & whistles that drink truly requires.

katcollins's fave place to cycle is at the Leslie Street Spit

katcollins's fave place to cycle is at the Leslie Street Spit because It's like being someplace far away from the city, but with the entire city skyline in your view.

katcollins's fave gelato is at La Paloma Authentic Gelateria & Cafe

katcollins's fave gelato is at La Paloma Authentic Gelateria & Cafe because Not only do they have the best gelato in Toronto (in amazing flavours like fig, grapefruit, baccio and tiramisu) but they often stay open till midnight and even later on the hottest summer nights - especially if the nearby public swimming pool is open late!

katcollins's fave bike store is at The Bike Joint

katcollins's fave bike store is at The Bike Joint because They're friendly, fast, knowledgeable, and their prices are totally reasonable.
